5 Tips to Increase Your Laptop Battery Life

Owning a laptop can be a really great convenience especially when you need to stay connected wherever you go. However, as all laptop owners know, there is one thing that can make staying connected a big challenge- keeping the battery alive long enough. On average most laptop owners will get about three to four hours of battery life on their computers. If you want to get something that lasts a bit more than this here are some things to keep in mind.

1.Keep Your Hard Drive in Shape - by this we mean making sure that your hard drive runs at best it can. You can make sure that it processes at a speed that is good by regularly defragmenting your laptop. Faster processing will use up less battery, helping to extend its life. On the same note, you may also want to stop processes that are running on the background which are not really necessary.

2. Unload What Is not Needed - unless you are next to a power outlet you will want to remove all those things that you have plugged in. External gadgets like your mouse, keyboard, speakers etc. all suck up energy levels very quickly. You'll also want to make sure that your CD drive is empty. Even though you are not using the CD it will keep it spinning inside, which takes up battery energy.

3. Go Easy on Lights and Sounds - extending your battery life will mean having to tone down on the light of your LCD screen and lowering or eliminating sounds. Try to set the lighting at the lowest level that your eyes can take; as for sounds if you can live without them completely, then it would be better to just turn it off completely.

4. Tweak Your Power Options - if your system runs on either Windows XP or Vista then you should have access to advanced features that will help you manage your laptops power. You will be able to choose the different settings and maximize the battery by adjusting these settings.

5. Skip the Themes and Screen Savers - having the standard look on your laptop will not really hurt you. It will still run in the same way anyway. Most of the time these things are for aesthetic purposes only; and they can really use up a great amount of battery power, so just go without it. You will not be able to use it anyway if your laptop is off.

Additional Tip: while you are not going to use the laptop for more than 10-15 days, then take the battery out and store it inside a cool dry place. If battery is unused, it loses its charge eventually.
